Abstract
When discussing the connections between mathematics and music, many analytic methods take a very literal approach when selecting and discussing concepts that limit the extent to which one can analyze and understand music. This thesis focuses on breaking away from “traditional” analysis of music and compares two methods that can be used for a more granular analysis of harmonic formations. Utilizing newer approaches to these musical theories based in modern mathematics, we develop a set of skills that give insight into the technical and musical aspects of a composer’s techniques and discover that there is more to music than what meets the ear.
