Abstract
Water scarcity is becoming an increasingly glaring ecological and societal concern. Much of our freshwater resources are spent irrigating our crops. Traditional irrigation sources lack efficiency, as soil cannot hold water for extended periods of time. Superabsorbent polymers increase soil’s ability to retain moisture and therefore increase irrigation efficiency. My senior design team and I developed a mechanical device to deliver polymer and seeds to farmland. Our design is based on research and interviews with experts. We completed finite element analysis to ensure the safety of our device.
