Abstract/Artist's Statement
In process and presentation, An Ode to Alma explores the agency involved in Black Motherhood & Womanhood. My practice is wholly concerned with Black Femme life and embodiment, with an intended audience from within that same community. I assemble fully formed characters who I know all too well, my mother and great-grandmother. Individually and situationally, they hold power over their self-presentation and external perception, a power frequently denied to Black Women and mothers in their daily lives. Viewers of this installation are challenged to consider the ephemerality of what it means to find safety, freedom, and vulnerability - from an outside looking in approach - of a Black Femme lineage.
