Abstract/Artist's Statement

A WORLD AWAY observes the way we are forever preserving the past while we anticipate the future, a world where we pause between the two in consideration. This world involves a seemingly endless quest to reach an ideal, desiring the undesirable, and a visual sense of longing.

Contextually the subjects and objects in these photographs are from a moment of the past, rendered increasingly irrelevant through time, but continuing to occupy space in the structure of the present and extending dubiously into the future. Whether it concerns a gradually fading suit jacket in a storefront window or the silent smoke of a regulated farm fire, these preempted forms lie in the realm of the material world and sit motionless as normal life carries on.

An empty pool marks the spell of a drought while the person inside it yearns for its original purpose. The old motel sign stands abandoned although it continues to suggest a faded thought of glory and paradise. These are the places and moments that the past and future overlap in this world of idleness.
