Abstract
During the height of the Covid pandemic, in 2021, a group of colleagues from Bard College and the Global Higher Education Alliance for the 21st Century's Civic Engagement Initiative (CEI) and IWT Center for Liberal Arts and Sciences Pedagogy (IWT CLASP) decided to bring faculty and administrators from across the new network together to learn about one another’s approaches to experiential and engaged learning practices. The Global Higher Education Alliance for the 21st Century (GHEA21) places liberal arts education front and center by providing training on curriculum design, pedagogical development, and civic engagement. The Experiential Learning Institute (ELI) is a joint product of IWT CLASP's approach to student-centered teaching methods, writing-based teaching, and experiential learning and CEI’s expertise in bridging curricular and co-curricular initiatives and community engagement.
Since the success of our first ELI in 2021, CEI and IWT CLASP have convened 100 colleagues from across 15 campuses and 5 geographic locations around the world to both equip practitioners and share experiences, so they can lead experiential learning courses (and workshops) in their own unique contexts. As we train faculty, we continue to enhance the ELI based on updated best practices, participant feedback, and shifting needs for professional development. For example, we have added discussions on experiential learning approaches for faculty who teach in person, online, or in a hybrid manner.
This Open Educational Resource showcases nine faculty and staff who have designed courses and programs on their campuses that incorporate experiential learning and community engagement. To date, these nine courses have impacted over 960 students.
