Abstract
The impetus for this thesis was to create a project that continued my previous work from my concentrations in geography and ceramics and to strengthen a connection I felt between them. The focus of this thesis became the understanding of the fire regimes occurring within Portugal through the creation and presentation of tiles inspired by the traditional Portuguese practice of azulejo. With this project, I place myself as a contemporary artist working within the historical context of azulejo. I created an exhibit of tiles that would reflect my research on forest fire ecology and on tile-making methods, including creating wood-fired tiles. The ways in which my method, research, and product informed one another are described here.
