Abstract

This thesis presents a reflective and practical overview of the creative and personal processes that led to the conception and performance of Being Alive, an autobiographical cabaret exploring themes of love, loss, and mental health. I set out to create a work that would connect my lifelong engagement with theater, both as a performer and a student, with the challenges I faced in pursuing a formal education later in life. This piece examines how those experiences shaped my identity as an artist and informed the structure, tone, and content of the final performance. Tracing the development of Being Alive from its earliest inspirations to its final staging, this thesis details the integration of personal narrative with my musical theater repertoire, as well as the emotional and technical considerations involved in crafting a one-person show. It also considers how the act of revisiting personal history through performance served not only as an artistic endeavor but also as a form of healing and self-discovery.
