Abstract

This writing follows the process of creating my thesis film, titled Subnivean. It chronicles the film from conception through pre- and post-production and includes behind-the-scenes photos, production documents, and insights into what goes into writing, directing, and producing a 20-minute student film. Subnivean is a film following a man’s journey through loss and isolation on his deceased father's rural Massachusetts farm. Inspired by my personal experiences from my childhood, the film explores themes of resilience amidst the winter landscape. For the thesis, I wrote, directed, shot, and edited the film over my senior year. Scriptwriting and story brainstorming began in the summer of 2023 and the first semester of senior year, followed by pre-production tasks such as location scouting and casting. Filming took place in January of 2024 and involved a collaborative effort with Simon’s Rock and Oberlin College colleagues and a local professional actor. Post-production took place in the spring of 2024, and focused on editing, sound mixing, and color grading, ultimately preparing a final draft that was screened to the whole school and local community in April of 2024. This interdisciplinary thesis project aligned with my past studies and provided an opportunity to submit a longer short film to festivals, as well as a jump start into the professional world of filmmaking.
