Abstract
Within the setting of a medieval reenactment group called the Society for Creative Anachronism, “The Things We Miss” explores the world of two childhood best friends. Dottie and Gen have been away at college and are now returning to their enigmatic social group for a monumental event in Gen’s sister’s life. They are joined by Hiero and Seth, who have had their own journeys while Dottie and Gen have been away. With so much unsaid and unknown, the one-act play tracks the journey of one night between old friends. The original play uses music and immersive intimacy to invite the audience into the world of “The Things We Miss.” The performance recording and drafts of the script are accompanied by process notes which detail the writer-playwright-director’s ongoing concerns, choices, and milestones.
