Abstract
This thesis aims to explore the representation of post-traumatic stress disorder in contemporary middle grade literature using two series: Animorphs by K. A. Applegate and Michael Grant, and Wings of Fire by Tui T. Sutherland. In this analysis, I explore three questions: What symptoms are displayed in the characters in these series? What purpose does writing a character with PTSD have for the narrative? And what might these representations of PTSD teach the reading audience? To these aims, I analyze three characters from each series: Jake, Rachel, and Tobias from Animorphs, and Peril, Turtle, and Qibli from Wings of Fire.
