Abstract
In this thesis project, I explored what skills and perspectives—beyond textbook techniques and theories—makes for a good and effective therapist. Drawing on a variety of sources by renowned therapists and written for therapists (e.g., by Donald Winnicott, Irvin Yalom, and Carl Rogers), as well as research articles, this thesis explores the impact, benefits, and uses of the therapeutic relationship. Conclusions centered around how viewing therapeutic interactions from a more relational perspective and involving the client more as a collaborator in treatment can provide valuable insight.
