Abstract
Beginning on internet forums in the late 2000s, the “Let’s Play” art form blends various distinct kinds of video game with personal narrative of the player, occurring in many distinct subforms including blog/forum posts, YouTube series, and Twitch livestreams. The art form’s long history cannot be understated, as its creation shaped the fabric of internet culture and still does today. This paper details a history of the format, incorporating Panofsky’s theory of iconology and some work on digital lifespaces. Examples include Boatmurdered , The Terrible Secret of Animal Crossing, DarkSydePhil, PewDiePie, and Jerma985.
