Abstract

There are rarely scars or bruises that can be seen on the exterior when a child is neglected, the wounds are still there, most often deep inside. Intentional neglect--which includes physical and medical neglect--is often what people think about when they hear about neglect, and it can be difficult for people to understand that neglect can also be unintentional (from parents who are caring, but neglect nonetheless). The analysis of unintentional neglect discusses different common practices of parenting that are actually maladaptive to a child’s development. Symptoms of neglect will also be discussed in reference to several areas of development, and four case studies of neglect, all described in the book, The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog by Dr. Bruce Perry and Maia Szalavitz (2006), are introduced both to provide context and to show how diverse cases of emotional neglect can be.The treatment(s) used in cases of neglect needs to be multi-dimensional since the symptoms are so varied and so overlapping. Neglect is complicated for people to understand and difficult for many to admit to being on either side of neglectful relationship and the hope of this analysis is to provide information to make such conversations more likely.
