Abstract
In this thesis, I will first introduce a few terms relevant to the discussion of mental illness and stigma. Then I will go more in-depth into discussion of metaphor and what features define it, and look at a few case studies showing how metaphor has been applied in psychotherapy to help some individuals. After going through these main ideas, I will look at recent research that focuses on aspects of bipolar disorder (BD) and depression. The studies I discuss aim to shed light on mental processes taking place in patients with these illnesses in an effort to determine if and how things like mental imagery and understanding of metaphor affect symptoms or illness progression.
