Abstract/Artist's Statement
Fathoming the notion of time is imperative in a discipline that largely forces amnesia in a state of tabula rasa, offering fixed images of monumentality. Through a paradigm of architectural unsettlement and a trinity of experiences, I intend to disclose varied episodes of what might transpire when designing a dialectical account of the groundbreaking elements and herstoric fabric of a crumbling Catskill Resort. Through the fictional narrative of Grossinger’s Resort, I will set a scene both under construction and seemingly in ruins to foster a space that gives form to transience in a visceral manner where the past gradually slides into a new reality. From one constitution of materiality to another, the site invites people to view the built environment as a vessel and archival material of a trans historicized narrative. With attention to transitions, the project considers the opportunity to let go of a building’s identity and mature into something else, projecting deliberate temporal deformation as a communicative medium of personal storytelling. Under time and fragmentation, I will reassemble these building affairs through a diorama, a series of layered possibilities, and a redefinition of rituals, allowing individuals to recontextualize and bear witness to past disfigurements while the landscape proceeds into a new condition.
