Abstract/Artist's Statement

Like my dad always said, "You should have been an economics major?"

My favorite part of writing songs is being surprised by whatever obscene words escape my mouth… Like improvising on guitar, I don't always know what lyric or melody will come out until it has already been sung.

During my first semester at Bard I took a class on Freud and psychoanalysis with Helena Gibbs. She taught about Lacan's concept of "the lack," and that once you can accept your lack, or acknowledge the hole in the whole, life will be more bearable.

I like the feeling of a song coming together as I'm writing it, however a lot of the time, the different parts don't all join together neatly. I hope that my songs come out as dreams do––with rhymes and gaps and jumps and jokes and silence and the feeling of trying to figure out what's what and who's who.
