Abstract/Artist's Statement
AN ARTIST, NOW is an original musical by Jonja Merck and Laila Perlman inspired by and adapted from The Artificial Silk Girl by Irmgard Keun.
Doris, an 18-year-old woman moves to Berlin to become a star. While directly speaking to the audience, she describes her life in the city, how she is meeting men in the evenings at a bar and strolling through the busy streets. One night at the bar, she meets George, a businessman, and ultimately moves in with him. After a year, Doris is still unable to get onto any stages, George reveals that he has a wife and needs Doris to leave his apartment immediately. She is lost, back on the streets of the now cold, miserable city. Finally, the audience sees her homeless at a train station, begging for the attention of the audience and the people around her.
