Abstract/Artist's Statement
On our current trajectory, the devastating effects of climate change that loom on the horizon will make our present problems of pandemics and political crises seem disconcertingly manageable. And yet, our most powerful weapon to fight against the greatest existential threat mankind has ever faced, our land, is being ignored. Not only are we failing to use nature to restore itself, we are failing to realize that the way in which we utilize our land is what is killing it in the first place. We are surrounded by flora and soil that, when allowed to thrive, remove and store massive amounts of carbon from our atmosphere. With Polanyi as my guide, I will show why agricultural reform is increasingly becoming a necessity. Through an overview of works on various crops, as well as a close look at the viability of sustainable farming systems, I will show how we got to where we are today and that there is indeed a path forward.
