Abstract/Artist's Statement

Artist Statement

This piece is an animation that looks at the struggles of a young girl attempting to make her way in the art world while battling against the pressures of self doubt and her own ability to be distracted.

As a student artist, I am currently bound to the institutional framework of Bard College’s Senior Project program. In order to graduate each student must produce a cohesive body of work throughout the year -because the four years of classes and the ten of thousands dollars in loans isn’t enough already. However, because of the fact that I am a Virgo; I experience a lot of resistance to beginning a project because I would rather not start than not have it turn out the way I envisioned it.

I knew that I wanted to make an animation for my Senior Project; but after scrapping idea after idea, the process became even more daunting and nothing I made seemed to be connected in any way. Over the course of the first semester it became clear to me that the only thing my pieces represented as a whole was my inlability to commit to a specific idea and see it through.

This resulted in a video in which the main character is also struggling to see her project through. The piece is a dramatized reflection of my own process during the making of this video and my resistance to starting.
