Abstract/Artist's Statement

Senior Project submitted to The Division of Arts of Bard College.

Last summer I traveled to Germany after completing the German Intensive

class at Bard. My initial interest in German stemmed from singing, and the desire

to deepen my understanding of German text both in Lieder and German Opera.

While in Berlin, I decided that I wanted to perform a set of Lieder for one of my

Senior Recitals at Bard. I already loved Schubert, and had sung a handful of

his songs. Schwanengesang was a perfect fit for this recital, because not only is

Schubert one of my favorite German composers, but I also got to work with the

incredible German poetry of Rellstab and Heine, which I had already studied in

my German class.
