Abstract/Artist's Statement

A textual and visual exploration of how Mozambicans under Portuguese colonial rule were able to resist the colonial identity being forced upon them by the Portuguese; and the extent to which they could hold onto a sense of dignity and claim an identity distinct and independent than that of Portuguese subjects. This exploration will examine Mozambican history as it is presented on the pages of an autobiography, a work of fiction, and a series of photographs written and collected by three Mozambicans from one family.
