Abstract/Artist's Statement
I have proposed an investigation into the impact of contextual constraint on the integration of extended semantic representations. Extended representations are representations of concepts associated with a known word that are not associated with the word in its conventional use. I will assess word knowledge for conventional words being used in a novel context to see if the semantic representation of these words will access novel content. I will use N400 amplitudes to targets preceded by known prime words and slang prime words to measure whether the words have served as an effective prime to a target work. I expect to find that only those participants who were familiar with the context of the test sentences before the priming task will be able to use the slang word as an effective prime.
