Abstract/Artist's Statement
A novel method was developed for the synthesis of 2,3-disubstituted benzo[b]furans and benzo[b]thiophenes using electrophilic cyclization as the key step. This method not only requires as the solvent. This is a green methodology that can accomplish high yields of substituted products in high purity, requiring little or no explicit purification. This method can potentially tolerate a high number of substituted groups. In addition to iodo- and bromocyclization, chlorocyclization was also demonstrated. Our method has added advantages over earlier reported methods as it does not require toxic solvents and does not produce harmful halogenated wastes.
