Abstract/Artist's Statement
The photographer Clarence John Laughlin (1905- 1985) gained little recognition for his prolific body of work. His style is often referred to as "Southern Gothic." This paper explores the qualities of Laughlin's photographs that renders them as part of the Southern Gothic genre, and why his style marked him as an outsider in the world of American photography in the 20th century.
