Abstract/Artist's Statement
Em(body)ment
By Angela Tuckerman
As a 21st century woman from Los Angeles, I have grown up at the heart of a culture that promotes distorted values and ideals. I have personally experienced and also witnessed many of my peers suffer the consequences of these harsh and unrealistic expectations. This project is an exploration of the women in my life who are inevitably entrenched in this culture.
Each painting was based on a carefully constructed photograph in which I manipulated the clothing and environment to articulate my vision. While initially these women were meant to represent a more general, anonymous, “American” woman, overtime I realized that I was trying to understand my own relationship to these cultural expectations through describing the women in my world. Ultimately, this project gave me insight into how I simultaneously choose to adopt and reject elements of this culturally defined female character.
