Abstract/Artist's Statement
Artistic Statement
For the performing element of my Senior Project in Theater with a concentration in Directing, I chose to direct the play Savage/Love by Sam Shepard and Joseph Chaikin. The play was done as part of the Senior Projects in Directing that took place from November 13th through November 18th in 2012. It was presented by The Bard Theater & Performance Program and was performed in Resnick Studio at the Fisher Center for Performing Arts. In this play I directed two fellow students, Ben Gordon and Dana Shimkoski, in a 30-minute long production that also included 20 minutes of live music played by the actors. The play is a collection of love poems that focuses on the complexities of feelings involved in love. Instead of speaking in one voice, specific to a particular person, the poems focus on moments that almost anyone who has ever been in love can relate to. It was originally performed as a solo piece by Chaikin, but I chose to direct the play with two actors and create a specific storyline for the couple. I chose to direct the play in a memory style with poems falling out of order and repeating. It focused on the inability to communicate and the moments that are remembered after a relationship is over. I have to mention the amazing team that made my production possible including Alexis Distler, Bruce Steinberg, Kerk Soursourian, and Grace Schultz. A special thanks also The Bard Theater & Performance Program and my adviser Jean Wagner.
