Abstract/Artist's Statement
C-H activation of benzothiophene imine ligands with a dinuclear platinum species by oxidative addition followed by fast reductive elimination of methane is reported. The reaction of [Pt2(CH3)4(μ-S(CH3)2)2] with two equivalents of ligand, (R)- (C8H5S)CH=NCHCH3(C10H7) at room temperature, and a subsequent recrystallization gave the platinum (II) complex [Pt{(R)-(C8H5S)CH=NCHCH3(C10H7)}2] with two cyclometalated C^N ligands. This complex was characterized by X-ray diffraction, UV/vis, and proton NMR. Furthermore, emission in solution was observed at room temperature with a red shift > 200 nm and an excited state lifetime of 396 ns was determined. Vibronic fine structure was also observed in the emission spectrum at 77 K. DFT calculations were performed to assist in the assignment of electronic spectroscopy.
