Abstract/Artist's Statement
I did a translation and a critical analysis of Jusuf Naoum's novel, Nura: Eine Libanesin in Deutschland. Naoum is an Arab who immigrated to Germany and started writing literature in the German language. Nura is the most recent novel he has written, which talks about Nura, the main character of the novel, a Lebanese woman from Beirut who moves to Germany after the breakout of the civil war. Escaping from a rough life back home, the war, the social difficulties of being a woman in the Arab world, she hopes to build a new life in Germany. As expected, Nura (and Semra, the narrator of the novel, another Lebanese woman in Germany and Nura’s best friend) realizes that the grass on the other side is not always greener, and she finds herself confronted by fundamental issues of living a multi-cultural life.
