Abstract/Artist's Statement
Senior Project submitted to The Division of Arts of Bard College.
This project is meant to be a show for children. There are many things that compelled me to make this project, but I must admit that part of it was me wanting to make filmmakers and academics sit down and watch this show that is for children, and maybe remind them not to take anything too seriously. I wanted to make something fun for all ages. I love the childlike aesthetic, I like clowns and puppets and I like to use bright colors wherever I can.
Much of the work I have made at Bard has been on themes of technology, feminism, and mother/childhood, and this project is a continuation of such themes. To make this project I was inspired by the women in my family, my mother and sister, who both work in childcare. My sister is a teacher of first grade and inspired the character of Miss Terry. My mother is a nanny to Pearl, the little girl who appears in the piece and was the voice of Miss Terry in the scenes where she appeared with Pearl. I made this project as homage to the women in my family and as my own attempt at “childcare”.
This project is also homage to public television and all of the magical children’s programs it has broadcasted over the years. That is really what this project is supposed to emanate. And I really tried to make my own world, full of freaky clowns and puppets and kittens and butterflies, which is somewhere I would like to be. It was a labor of love. <3
