Abstract/Artist's Statement
This project, situated in the time period from the early nineteenth century to the 1870s in the canon of Orientalism, closely studies a 1834 harem painting by Eugene Delacroix, Women of Algiers (Fig. 1). Building upon these concepts and scholarship, the project intends to closely examine Delacroix’s painting Women of Algiers in their Apartment from the perspective of Delacroix as an artist and the process of perception of his contemporary French viewers through contextualization of social, cultural and political history of Imperial France.
