Abstract/Artist's Statement

CHAPTERS follows the life of a young black Hispanic girl named Carmen Dulce, providing a glimpse of the not-muched-talked-about racism embedded in Latin American communities. CHAPTERS begins with Carmen's exposure to the concept of race and follows her descent into a nasty web of inferiority complexes and insecurities. From aunts introducing her to whitening creams, to Carmen avoiding the sun and praying for a Michael Jackson skin-tone transformation, CHAPTERS reveals the devastating and long lasting effects racism can have on those exposed to it much too early in their lives.
