Abstract
This book distills the experiences of professors that teach a university course on natural sciences as part of a liberal arts curriculum. It is a compendium of lesson plans and activities that have been successfully put to use in the classrooms of Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ), the first private university in Latin American whose educational philosophy is specifically focused on the liberal arts. As part of a common liberal arts curriculum, USFQ offers a course on natural sciences named Cosmos, which is mandatory for all students. Cosmos courses are taught by a diverse group of professors, each one specialized in a distinct branch of scientific endeavor. This offers students taking the course a wide range of different perspectives and professional experiences. Together with LAS Collab, USFQ has asked several of its Cosmos professors to choose and share their lessons or activities that most exemplify a liberal arts education. This book is the result: a set of pedagogical guides that describe the best practices at USFQ with regards to teaching natural sciences from a liberal arts perspective. The book is aimed at university professors teaching natural sciences that seek to bolster their classwork through the use of materials that bring to bear wider conceptual breadth. Similarly, the book´s contents can be of use to professors that teach other fields of knowledge and wish to complement their class work with materials related to the natural sciences.
