Abstract

In this project I address the dehumanizing nature of institutionalized education, public schooling, capitalism, and American consumer culture by sharing the life stories of five low-income, self-supporting, young, undergraduate college students. This project is centered on my own story-one of a once fifteen-year-old drug addict from the ghettos of outer Atlanta who ran 1,000 miles away from an abusive household to Simon's Rock. Interwoven between my words are archives of life history interviews I arranged and conducted last semester. The transcriptions are written word for word, as I want these stories to be told exactly in the way they were spoken. This is a project about immense suffering and perseverance. I address suicide, eating disorders, drug abuse, detailed accounts of childhood rape, physical abuse, and much more.
