Seby Martinez’s One-Man Multi-Man Multimedia Extravaganza —an Artist Statement
“Cuz see me, my pimpin's in 3D. I’m takin’ you places you only see on TV.” - Ludacris, “Pimpin’ All Over The World,” 2004
Like Ludacris, I too hunger to push the boundaries of media and strive to create a multi-faceted image experience where an audience might transcend notions of time and space.
This project is a live screening/performance hybrid. It is a story about friends as well as an experiment in spontaneity, improvisation, chaos, ugliness, and food, as it were. In this story I marry dark absurdism and a meta-narrative to an interactive live experience including an experimental noise-jazz band and nauseating amounts of pasta sauce. The final product takes the form of a sketch show that sort of flips the late-night variety show format on its head. You can see within my dialogue that I’m very transparent about my influences, but I will say here that I took many of my cues from TV shows like Comedy Bang Bang, The Eric Andre Show, and Mr. Show with Bob and David, which as I see it are the current leaders of a rebellious kind of “alternative comedy” being thrown in consumers’ eye-holes. This integration of video sketches and parallel timelines into the live setting was the ideal format for me to work with, and one I expect to explore further in the future.
I had the extreme privilege of working with actors who are not only my best friends, but who also proved invaluable on the technical front, as a good chunk of camera and sound work fell gracefully on their shoulders. They really knocked it out of the park, and we all went for this massive project together. I think you can feel this unique sense of camaraderie and fun throughout the entire show, and that’s one of the things I’m most proud of. This project has its flaws, but that’s kind of the idea. The entire thing can fall apart at any moment, and I want my audience to feel that. Perfection is unappealing to me because it is something that eludes me, and personally, I think it’s funnier that it does. I believe that my audience will agree.
All in all, almost 40 minutes of this 60-75 minute long show consist solely of video presentation, with the rest of that time consisting of stage bits, many of which incorporate sound and projections as well. So, if my calculations are correct, I should receive at least 62% of a Film degree after completing this project and maybe split the rest between Theater and Experimental Humanities. Ball’s in your court, David.
