Abstract

Although the sustainable development goals (SDGs) were developed by the UN to aid in the development of common global issues ranging from poverty to gender equality to climate change, in so many ways, the concepts of the SDGs have inherently been part of global culture for millenia through the legacy of myth, legend, and story. This Open Educational Resource will attempt to provide educators with a unique new toolset to allow students to use storytelling — combined with aspects of AI - as a foundation for discussing cultural “SDGs” through digital storytelling. Students will produce a video that uses AI imagery that they create to help visualize a myth/story from their home culture that they narrate — ending with a discussion of how they see this story relating to one of the SDGs. How are myths and SDGs related? Every myth is based upon a kernel of truth that revolves around a moral. What are morals for? They are for ensuring that the cultural norms that govern a population’s safety and security are known and understood by those within the culture. When we begin breaking these down, we see that these morals can all be included under the umbrella of the SDGs — proto SDGs if you will. Thus, these stories allow us to look back in time to an era of oral tradition based on the same principles that the SDGs were founded on — sustainability and equity for all life on Earth. This Open Educational Resource includes a resource section for educators, an instruction section for students, a completed example of a finished product, a rubric that can be modified to suit the educator’s preferences, an infographic, and a consent form for students to share their work with the greater OSUN community. It is my hope that this resource can provide a new way to discuss the SDGs, appropriately integrate AI into the classroom, and engage students with the oldest way of teaching and learning — storytelling.
