Abstract
This thesis project draws on Ekman's theory of the six basic emotions and delves deeper into the understanding of how emotions are represented in facial expressions. According to Ekman, a lie can be detected as our true feelings are still represented on the face. The six basic emotions--happiness, sadness, surprise, fear, anger and disgust, are discussed in detail, and how they are relevant for understanding love and lies are explored. The question of if love is an emotion or not is also discussed. Various mediums of art, such as photography, painting and drawing, most created for this project, are included to give a better visual understanding of the underpinnings of emotions and emotional expression.
