Abstract
Evidence is a reaction to the systemic violence against the queer and trans* communities, shock value photojournalism and the failure of documentary photography to document. In an attempt not to exploit or martyrize survivors and to honor that physical and psychological recovery is sometimes honey-slow, I have chosen to go against the traditional "battered" or "fallen" portraiture that makes poster children out of pain and simplifies oppression into graphic design. These photographs were taken in Brooklyn, New York, sometimes years after the event occurred, with no crime tape and no blood. What's left I call "Evidence" and I hope the ambiguity honors and leaves complex the brutal realities of violence against marginalized communities.
