Abstract
This thesis is about environmental disaster and community life in the Ironbound neighborhood of Newark, New Jersey. In the project, I focus on accountability and displacement around environmental disasters. I also describe the various groups and organizations in the Ironbound, such as the Ironbound Community Corporation and church involvement, that work to a try to make compromises between the higher ups and the community at large and provide services geared towards helping families, senior citizens, and children. This project includes photographs that documented many of the elements discussed in the written portion of the project. These resulted in an exhibition of twenty printed images, all of which I took during my time living and working in the Ironbound, and highlight how the circumstances faced in the Ironbound resemble those faced by many communities throughout the U.S. and around the world. In order to make an impact, it is important to raise awareness not just through words but through images, as well.
