Abstract
This thesis confronts digitally contrived imagery on a basis of ethics. Through theoretical and semiotic inquiry, and with the help of images produced solely for this project, this thesis aims to discuss the fundamental differences between Photography and composites, the cultural implications and interpretations of contrived imagery, and the ethical impetus for distinguishing between these two forms of art-making. At the most basic level, this thesis does not aim to construct a hierarchy of artistic authenticity between the two, but rather to draw attention to their differences, and the importance of the recognition of these differences.
