Abstract
This document records my endeavor to explore the possibilities of movement within a theatrical environment, discovering the specific tools available to me in the medium of theatre, independent of stories and text. I am interested in the theatrical presence before, beyond, and transcendent of the text of a play. The project of my thesis was a theatre piece which I created and directed. It was performed in the Leibowitz Studio Theater in February, 2016. Herein is a log of the process of arriving at my theatrical presentation, and of the thought and questions behind it. It consists of my writings and musings as I tackled a project so new to me, as well as a journal of my rehearsal process leading up to the performance. I have also included a theoretical discussion of some of the ideas I was tackling through the making of the piece, and lastly, you will find my articulation of some theatrical principles, which, as I have discovered through this process, are important to me as a director. The appendix includes a number of archival materials from the production, and a video is available at the circulation desk. Enjoy!
