Abstract/Artist's Statement
When I paint I meditate on aspects of my life that I either appreciate, or would like to see change. Often, my paintings are optimistic and depict a colorful utopia, but at other times, I want them to represent my true feelings on the world, no matter how grim.
Painting has always been an outlet for me. The practice allows me to come to terms with my changing identity. It is hard to form an opinion when you can see both sides of an argument, as it is hard living as a multiracial person, in a nation still divided. I have a difficult time resolving issues regarding race and gender, even in my own mind. But the truth about how I feel about the world can be found within my paintings. I am just one individual struggling to find a place, an identity, and a voice within America.
