Abstract/Artist's Statement
Both of my concerts this year had distinct goals but a similar message. I feel as though a lot of artists and musicians, especially in the college setting, get wrapped up in a desire for complexity, a desire to have something deeply “meaningful” and “serious.” My goals are not as such, which is not to detract from their meaningfulness or seriousness of intentions. My desire is only to be honest, with myself and with my audience, which is to say that my art elicits an emotional response, the type of response that many composers would deem unimportant compared to the difficult, intellectual response they desire. I encourage laughter at my concerts as much as I encourage tears or simply thoughtfulness and reflection on the music and life in general.
