Abstract/Artist's Statement

German unification in 1990 has no doubt brought tremendous social and economic transformation of East Germany and helped build the new German economy as a whole. This thesis consists of three independent essays which focus on three different topics about social and economic repercussions of German unification. The first essay goes through the grand picture of the economic situation of both West and East Germany on the eve of unification and the transformation in aspects of wage, unemployment, trade unions and income inequality. The second essay demonstrates the history of East German automobile industry since the post ww1 era with a focus on its innovation power. Last but not least, the third essay is an analysis of the development and the factors of the income inequality in Germany after the unification.
