Abstract/Artist's Statement

The collection is divided into two sections, pastiches and original short stories, followed by an appendix. There are three pastiches, modeled after short stories by Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, and Peter Orner, and were written in the beginning of the project as a creative exercise. These were done in conjunction with a stylistic analysis of each piece, the goal being to gain a more in-depth insight as to how the story exists and develops within its particular style, than if one were to just simply read the story and [hopefully] think about it. It is forcing your own idea, or character, into the exact structure of another author’s. These brief examinations are located in the appendix, as an after-thought to their pastiches. The second section consists of four original short stories, written throughout the year.
