Abstract/Artist's Statement
The film i've made is a hand drawn animation, using black and white cutouts, meant to represent myself and other popular symbols. It is basically a self portrait, but is also meant to be iconic and recognizable as any human, suffering from human emotion. It is abstract, as are the ideas and emotions of the film.
The duration of the movie is much longer than the amount of time it tries to portray. It is merely an overwhelming emotion, that the main character experiences. Fear, confusion, lonliness, helplesness, anger.
A flash light is a small tool used for seeing in the dark. It can be useful, but it only allows one to see a small part of what is in the dark. The title not only refers to the flashing aesthetic of the film, and the idea of light versus dark, but the notion of having no sight but what you choose to see. what you point your flashlight at.
This is where my flashlight points. At the relationship between people and god, and society, and nature, and most of all drugs and alcohol.
In the end, i am an artist, and the film is also about exploring visual possibilities, and developing illustrative skill. The film was driven by the drawings, and not the other way around, and the drawings were driven by more of an idea than a narrative. An idea that i am still currently trying to express. Hopefully the film will come closer.
