Abstract/Artist's Statement
I create the paintings I do to capture beauty in the world. Such beauty can include the stars, misty colors, water lakes and castles. I enjoy blending colors in a specific way to create a visceral response. I take painting seriously and my goal is to be an evocative painter. Learning more about paint is important, to me, and I think anyone who wants to paint should. I admire art, both created by classmates and artists.
In these paintings I am using a variety of techniques, such as not looking at an image, working straight from life, and combining photographs and life. I like to observe the way trees look through my window in my studio. I also like to study shadows. Sometimes I look at other artists to get an idea, these artists include Henry Darger, and Georges Seurat. Additionally to admiring other artists, I also admire technical skill in other peoples work.
Finding my medium for my Senior Project at Bard has been a journey. I didn’t know what I wanted to do at first. I explored different mediums before deciding that my primary interests were drawing and painting. I discovered that the way to paint is to fill the whole canvas, something I was told in high school, but didn’t understand until I got to college. I would like to learn more about art history and technique to continue painting, but if I don’t succeed in this I will still be proud of myself.
